F.A.Q - Frequently Ask Questions

How much does an Iron Den D1 camper weigh?

D1 campers for 5 ft to 6 ft truck beds weigh approximately 800 lbs as an empty base camper. As accessories and build options are added, total weight can increase up to approximately 1,250 lbs depending on configuration.

Does camper weight change with added options?

Yes. Items such as additional cabinetry, electrical upgrades, water systems, heaters, exterior accessories, and custom features will increase overall camper weight. Every Den is built to order, so final weight depends on the selected options.

Is there a weight difference between the D1 and the D2?

The weight difference between the D1 and D2 is minimal. The D1 typically weighs slightly more than the D2 due to its angled sidewall design and construction, but the difference is small and does not meaningfully impact vehicle compatibility.

Does camper weight increase with longer truck beds?

Yes. As the camper length increases to accommodate longer truck beds, overall weight increases accordingly. Longer beds require additional structure and materials, which naturally adds weight.

Are Iron Den campers considered lightweight?

Yes. Iron Den campers are designed with lightweight, all-aluminum construction to keep weight as low as possible while maintaining strength and durability, especially compared to traditional slide-in campers.

How do I know if my truck can safely carry an Iron Den camper?

We review your truck’s specifications during the build process and help ensure the camper configuration matches your vehicle’s payload capacity. Suspension support such as airbags may be recommended to keep the truck level and performing properly.

Is the listed weight an estimate or a final number?

Listed weights are typical ranges. Final weight varies by bed length and selected options. A more accurate estimate can be provided once your build is configured.

What is the main difference between the D1 and the D2?

The primary difference is the sidewall design. The D1 uses angled sidewalls that follow the cab of the truck, creating a cleaner, more tactical profile. The D2 uses straight sidewalls, resulting in a more traditional, box-style slide-in camper shape.

Why does the D1 cost $2,000 more than the D2?

The D1 requires more complex design and fabrication due to the angled sidewalls. This design is uncommon in slide-in campers, especially on smaller trucks, and adds cost while improving aerodynamics, appearance, and overall integration with the vehicle.

Does the D1 perform differently on the road than the D2?

Yes. The angled sides of the D1 reduce wind drag and typically produce less wind noise at highway speeds compared to the squared-off sides of the D2.

Is there a difference in interior space between the D1 and D2?

Yes. The D2 offers slightly more interior width because the sidewalls are straight. The D1 sacrifices a small amount of interior space in exchange for its aerodynamic exterior shape.

Which model looks more integrated with the truck?

The D1 has a more integrated, factory-fit appearance because the sidewalls follow the cab angle of the truck. The D2 has a more traditional slide-in camper look.

Is the D1 a common camper design?

No. The D1 is one of very few slide-in truck campers on the market with angled sidewalls, particularly in a compact or mid-size truck platform.

Which model should I choose?

Choose the D1 if you value reduced wind noise, improved aerodynamics, and a unique, aggressive design that blends into the truck. Choose the D2 if your priority is maximizing interior space and keeping the overall cost lower. Both models are built to the same Iron Den quality standards and are fully customizable.

Do you offer name-brand appliances like Renogy or Dometic?

Yes. We can build your Iron Den with Renogy and Dometic components if requested.

Are Renogy and Dometic included in the base camper price?

No. These are premium, name-brand upgrades and are not included in the base price of the camper.

How do name-brand appliances affect the cost of the camper?

Choosing Renogy or Dometic components will increase the total price of the camper significantly. These brands carry higher material and sourcing costs compared to our standard equipment.

Why aren’t these brands standard equipment?

Iron Den is a fully custom build. We offer a high-quality standard setup that balances performance, reliability, and cost. Name-brand appliances are available for customers who specifically want them, but we do not force that added cost into every build.

Are the standard Iron Den appliances lower quality?

No. Our standard components are carefully selected for reliability, real-world use, and value. Many customers prefer them because they perform well without the added expense of premium branding.

Can I mix standard components with name-brand upgrades?

Yes. You can choose individual upgrades while keeping other systems standard, allowing you to control cost while upgrading where it matters most to you.

Will you help me decide which setup is best for my build?

Yes. During the build process, we’ll walk through your usage, travel style, and budget to help you choose the appliance and accessory setup that makes the most sense for your Iron Den.
